Barclays declined to comment on Oberle’s appointment. Oberle will be the head of Barclays’ financial sponsors group (FPG) in the Americas and report to its head of global FPG, Jean-France Astier.
The bank has long sought to expand its relationships in private equity (PE). Oberle didn’t immediately reply to a phone and voicemail requesting comment. Oberle’s hiring comes as Barclays is working on plans to eliminate hundreds of jobs within its domestic retail unit and separately in its annual evaluation of investment bankers’ performance.
Earlier this year, CEO C. S. Venkatakrishnan appointed new leaders at the head of the investment banking unit. The unit has added over 20 managing directors this year but also saw a surge in departures.
Oberle’s departure from JPMorgan comes just a few months after former senior M&A banker Marc Caggiano left the US bank to join Morgan Stanley, where he was vice chairman of M&A.
